Falmouth harbour is reputed to be the third largest natural harbour in the world. In tudor times the Fal river was a busy and important port. Henry VIII built Pendennis Castle to protect the town and port. The castle is situated on the tip of the promontory with Falmouth behind it.As a base to explore this region of Cornwall, Falmouth has many advantages. the beaches are good, the rugged cornish coast provides many surprises with magnificent sandy stretches as wellas hidden coves. Falmouth town centre is busy with craft shops and fish merchants as well as some lovely restuarants and pubs to eat at. Ferries and pleasure trips abound with fishing and site seeing readily available.
