Big Ben is commonly refer to the clocktower situated next to the Houses of Parliament. In fact it actually is a huge thirteen ton bell that strikes the hour and which is housed in the clocktower itself.

In 1844 Parliament decided that a new building for the Houses of Parliamnet should incorpoarate a tower and clock. The tower was completed in 1859 and stands 316ft tall.

A popular touriat destination, Big Ben is best seen from the southern side of Westminster Bridge or even from the Bridge itself. Traffic, road layout and trees otherwise obscure the view. The chimes of Big Ben as it beats out the old year are broadcast every year and herald partying and celebrations in nearby Trafalgar Square.

Big Ben is about a mile from Trafalgar Sqaure along Whitehall. It can also be reached from Horseguards, St. James Park and Vauxhall. The nearest tube station is Westminster on the Circle and District Lines and the Jubilee line. There is no parking nearby, it is best reached on foot.
