A visit to the old English town on the Sussex coast is well worth it. This old port town can trace its history back to before the Norman conquest, when it was surrounded by water. Today, the sea has retreated some two miles from the original town, but this has been compensated by the marvellous walk to its pebble beach through a nature reserve at what is today known as Rye harbour.
The town of Rye has had a varied and exciting history, the stone cobbled streets can teel many an exciting tale of war pestulance and smuggling.
The history of the town starts in 1014, when the Manor of Rameslie was promised to the Abbey of Fecamp in Normandy by Ethelred the Unready. In 1205 when Normandy was returned to the French Crown this part of Sussex became French territory. Henry III brought back the town and the surrounding area to English control. Since that time Rye wnderwent a period of sustained fortification.
In the 13th Century Henry II and Edward I consolidated the defence of the realm with the Charter of the Cinque Ports, which menat towns along the Kent and Sussex coasts provided safe harbour, a quota of ships and men to sail them. In return these towns were provided with common rights and privileges with freedom from taxes and customs duties.
Rye was continually attacked by the French and even by the Spanish, though the latter were routed by Edward II and his son, the Black Prince in 1350 in Rye Bay.
The 18th century saw the development of smuggling. The town had many secret tunnels and passages some of which can be seen today .
